Rarely do we turn to technology to assist us with this.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In our recent MAMM case study, however, we chose to change that, exploring the outputs of a digital language-processing tool called <a href=\"https:\/\/voyant-tools.org\/\"><strong>Voyant<\/strong><\/a>. Although Voyant is an older tool, we were curious to investigate and compare Voyant\u2019s data about the full text of <mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-accent-color\">Ann-Marie MacDonald\u2019s Fayne, which we dubbed <strong>the \u201cbig text\u201d<\/strong>, and our mined quotations regarding spaces of female friendships, <strong>the \u201csmall text\u201d<\/strong><\/mark><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-contrast-3-color\">.<\/mark> Our team selected specific Voyant tools to focus on, gravitating towards features like <a href=\"https:\/\/voyant-tools.org\/docs\/tutorial-termsberry.html\"><strong>TermsBerry<\/strong><\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/voyant-tools.org\/docs\/tutorial-trends.html\"><strong>Trends<\/strong><\/a> that visually demonstrated the prevalence of words, and by association, themes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>It was intriguing to witness the data that Voyant produced individually and examine what that reflected about Fayne, but it was more fascinating to compare the data outputs of \u201cbig text\u201d and \u201csmall text\u201d. The initial language-processing Voyant did of Fayne allowed for comparative study between said data and our quotations regarding <mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-accent-color\">spaces of female friendships, something highly relevant to our Phase 2 research and explorations of intimacy<\/mark>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There was a moment, instantly after feeding the \u201csmall text\u201d through Voyant. A moment where such different words were visible onscreen, where we all eagerly scanned the data and pointed out specifics to each other. <mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-accent-color\"><strong>This was a moment of recognition<\/strong><\/mark> that we were able to transform a language-processing tool into something more than statistical output. Voyant was now a visually comparative representation of the spaces, atmospheres, and importance of female friendships.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"769\" src=\"https:\/\/mamm.cfdh.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/Voyant-whiteboard-1024x769.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-7587\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mamm.cfdh.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/Voyant-whiteboard-1024x769.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/mamm.cfdh.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/Voyant-whiteboard-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/mamm.cfdh.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/Voyant-whiteboard-768x577.jpg 768w, https:\/\/mamm.cfdh.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/Voyant-whiteboard-1536x1153.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/mamm.cfdh.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/Voyant-whiteboard-2048x1538.jpg 2048w, https:\/\/mamm.cfdh.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/Voyant-whiteboard-16x12.jpg 16w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Of all our collaborative work, this was a very enriching experience. Our team worked together to navigate an initially foreign tool, filling whiteboards with ideas and discoveries. <mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-accent-color\">We each found different angles from which to view the data, yet shared the emotional responses each new discovery triggered<\/mark>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This emotion made our usage of Voyant so starkly unique. The tool itself highlights intriguing aspects of the novel, but<mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-accent-color\"> <strong>the incorporation of our intimate human-level processing brought emotion into the machine-level data output<\/strong>.<\/mark> It was heartwarming to investigate the data\u2019s significance, associating \u201chome\u201d and decentring of males with female friendships; it was nauseating and unsettling to investigate other aspects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While Voyant understands word quantity and the novel\u2019s language patterns, we understand the significance of that data in Ann-Marie MacDonald\u2019s work.
